Certainly, repetition is part of the roguelike experience, but there also needs to be something to keep the experience fresh at all times. Unfortunately, one thing I feel is lacking is variety. It does a great job of keeping things interesting with each run. Completion of each room then provides you with a choice of two paths - you may be low on health and one of the rooms is offering a chance to heal, yet the other path has your favourite spell. There’s also an effective risk versus reward system. You select from a wide variety of spells, defeat enemies as you venture deeper into the ancient ruin and choose from a plethora of power ups to increase your chances of success. In its opening hours, Lone Ruin offers some good ol’ fashioned roguelike fun. This is part of the roguelike formula that Lone Ruin understands and that short gap between demise and renewal makes it harder to resist the urge for another go. And that’s part of the fun of these games, after all, the ability to dive straight back into another run-through after biting the dust. A lot is left up to interpretation, but the lack of story trappings means it’s all the easier to jump into each run unhindered. It’s a simple, minimalist set-up with little in-game lore or even cutscenes. As you dive deeper and deeper, you sling your arsenal of spells at the fiends and monsters that seek to halt your progress. Playing as an unnamed, explorative mage, you enter a ruined magical city in search of the power nestled within its crumbling walls. Lone Ruin from Cuddle Monster Games is a twin-stick shooter roguelike that tries its best to replicate that sort of addictive, cyclical gameplay. Luckily, your character is pretty light on their feet, and they also have a dash move on a small cooldown that can grant a few i-frames of respite while you reposition. How long can you survive against the rising difficulty and increasingly tougher foes? Looking for a different challenge? Take on the Survival mode for a timed, wave-based game mode. Some enemies can shoot lasers and projectiles while others may explode on contact, and when things really heat up, there’s scarcely a square inch of space to be found onscreen where your character won’t be hurt. Most enemies go down after just a few shots, but the tricky part comes in with how easily you can get swarmed by them. A typical run involves you entering a room, clearing out all waves of enemies, collecting the reward (if you survive), then moving on to the next room. Lone Ruin is all about the gameplay, which is equal parts thrilling and simple. Though Lone Ruin doesn’t feel like it quite meets the bar its predecessor set, it still manages to be a raucously good time while it lasts. I played this exclusively on Steam Deck with no issues, it took me under 2 hours (Seriously) to complete a full playthrough. ![]() It seriously feels almost like a demo or early access launch. The aesthetics though for this game are very good, the animations, art-style, and visuals all pop on the screen which is so strange because the actual game is so thin. You start with 1 weapon and a dash and upgrade as you go through the rooms, picking up new spells and passives, we've all done this before ad nauseum at this point in gaming. The moment to moment gameplay is pretty fun if not at all innovative or inspiring. There is only 1 level that features about 15 rooms and 3 bosses, once you beat it you get the end credits, there is no story at all, there are only about 8 different enemy types, and the rooms and animations are similar and static throughout. I would say this is one of the most under developed games I can remember, not from a polish or quality standpoint but just from a content perspective.
